Maria Emília de Oliveira Santos Costa Bigotte de Almeida was born in Coimbra. She studied at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra where she completed in 1983, the degree of Mathematical and Scientific Branch and in 1988, a Master of Computer Science. From 1985 to 1992 was hired as Assistant Teacher, Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra and from 1992 she was hired as Teacher in the Department of Physics and Mathematics of the Institute of Engineering of Coimbra (DFM-ISEC) the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, a position she still holds today. She has been responsible for courses of Statistical Methods, Discrete Mathematics, Operational Research and Differential and Integral Calculus, having taught theoretical and theoretical-practical on an exclusive basis and full time. She also was responsible for Analysis of Discipline Group (2010 – 2013), Coordinator of the Disclosure Group and Image of DFM-ISEC (2008-2012), the Commissioner of the Degree Course in Biomedical Engineering since 2009 and Coordinator of the Research Group on Teaching of Mathematics in Engineering-GIDiMatE, since its inception (April 2011).
Her areas of interest and research are linked to the Teaching of Mathematics, the Educational Technology and the Education Organization. She has been coordinator of several projects within the Educational Sciences in partnership with several institutions of higher education (Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra, Superior Miguel Torga Institute, College of Education of Coimbra, among others). She was organizing scientific meetings and national and international workshops. She has participated in several national and international conferences, with publication of some of the papers presented.
