Licenciado, Mestre, e Doutor em Eng. Electrotécnica e de Computadores, pela Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, em 1991, 1995, e 1999, respectivamente. Ingressou no Politécnico do Porto - Instituto Superior de Engenharia em Janeiro de 1994, onde é atualmente Professor Adjunto no Departamento de Engenharia Electrotécnica. É o atual responsável do Núcleo de Investigação em Sistemas de Teste do Centro de Inovação em Engenharia e Tecnologia Industrial, uma unidade financiada pela Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia. Participou em 19 projetos nacionais e internacionais de I&D. Autor ou co-autor de mais de 250 publicações, incluindo capítulos de livro, e artigos em revistas e conferências internacionais, com comité de revisão. Co-editou ainda um livro na área dos laboratórios remotos. As suas áreas de interesse incluem os laboratórios remotos e a educação em engenharia. Membro do Global Online Laboratory Consortium e da Sociedade Portuguesa para a Educação em Engenharia, procura sensibilizar a comunidade educacional internacional para a importância dos laboratórios e das atividades experimentais na Educação em Engenharia. Serviu como corresponsável de programa das 1ª e 2ª edições da Conferência Internacional da Sociedade Portuguesa para a Educação, da 3ª Experiment@ International Conference, e como responsável geral da 11ª Remote Engineering and Virtual Instrumentation conference e da 3ª Technological Ecosystems for Enhancing Multiculturality conference. É editor associado da IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, tendo servido como editor convidado na IEEE-RITA, iJOE, iJEP, European Journal on Engineering Education e na Computers in Human Behavior.

Gustavo R. Alves graduated in 1991 and obtained an MSc and a PhD degree in Computers and Electrical Engineering in 1995 and 1999, respectively, from the University of Porto, Portugal. He is a professor at the Polytechnic of Porto - School of Engineering, since 1994. He has authored or co-authored +250 publications, including book chapters and conference and journal papers with a referee process, and also co-edited 2 books.
He was involved in 19 national & international research projects. His research interests include engineering education, remote experimentation, and design for debug & test. He served as program co-chair of the 1st and 2nd International Conferences of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE2013 and CISPEE2016), of the 3rd Experiment@ International Conference, and as general chair of the 11th Remote Engineering and Virtual Instrumentation (REV2014) conference and of the 3rd Technological Ecosystems for Enhancing Multiculturality (TEEM2015) conference, and also as a Program Committee member of several international conferences. He currently serves as general co-chair of the 2020 IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON) and of the 2020 edition of the Learning Technologies for Electrical and Electronic Engineering Education (TAEE).
Dr. Alves is the present President of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (SPEE), Vice-President of the Global Online Laboratory Consortium (GOLC), a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a member the Portuguese Engineers Association (OE), and of the Virtual Instrumentation Systems in Reality - Special Interest Group (VISIR-SIG). He has served as guest editor at the international Journal of Online Engineering (iJOE), the international Journal of Engineering Pedagogy (iJEP), the IEEE Latin-American Learning Technologies Journal (IEEE-RITA), the European Journal of Engineering Education (EJEE), and Computers in Human Behavior (CHB). He currently serves as an Associated Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies.
